BIOGRAPHY
Yuka Taniai was born in Miyazaki, Japan in 1990 and lives in Tokyo. She graduated from Musashino Art University in 2015 with a degree in Metal Crafts from the Department of Crafts and Industrial Design. She first came across contemporary jewelry while studying metal crafts during her studies.Attracted by the idea of overturning stereotypes such as material values, she began creating jewelry using resin materials. After completing her studies, She worked as a staff member at an arts and crafts gallery for four years while exhibiting her work. After retiring, she began her career as an artist.
She sees the act of dressing up as wearing light, and explores the expression of light by using acrylic and nylon, materials unique to the modern age that utilize transparency and reflection. The process of threading a single nylon thread through a perforated acrylic plate evokes the flow of time, while the layers of nylon threads that form the 3D shape of the piece reveal the boundaries and gaps in time. She also explores the possibilities of time as an object contained within time.
Acrylic plate and nylon thread are used.An acrylic plate is cut with a thread saw, many holes are drilled, and nylon thread is threaded through the holes. The nylon thread forms an elastic membrane that allows for a 3D structure. All of this is done by hand and is the artist’s original technique.
In recent years, She has expanded her interpretation of light and incorporated colorful staining. In her latest works, she adjusts the dye formulation and shading more than ever before. She is expanding her range of expression. In 2020, She will create the “moment” (2020-) series, inspired by the Hojoki by Kamo no Chomei. This series of jewelry was created as a key to become aware of the connection between the time in which Kamo no Chomei lived and the Corona Vortex.
